The Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers meet tonight in a winner-take-all Game 7 at Little Caesars Arena, with a berth in the Eastern Conference Finals on the line. Tip-off is 8 p.m. ET on Prime Video. The winner advances to face the New York Knicks.

The series is tied 3-3 after Detroit’s 115-94 demolition of Cleveland on Friday. The Pistons have now staved off elimination four times this postseason – an unprecedented level of resilience for a young roster that was expected to be overmatched. Cleveland lost their first home game of the entire playoffs in Game 6.

Cunningham’s elimination-game track record

Cade Cunningham (21 points, 8 assists in Game 6) owns a career average of 29.5 points and 7.3 assists in elimination games. He’s unafraid of the moment. Friday’s performance – 5-of-10 from three, steady through every possession – showed a player who rises when the stakes demand it. The Pistons broke the game open in the third quarter and never let Cleveland back in.

Jalen Duren (15 points, 11 rebounds) gave Detroit a physical presence Cleveland had no answer for. Detroit’s home record this season was 32-9 – third-best in the NBA – and Little Caesars Arena has been a genuine problem for visitors all year long.

Mitchell and Harden need a different answer

Donovan Mitchell has averaged 28.5 points per game in this series but managed just 18 in Game 6. For Cleveland to win tonight, Mitchell needs the version he brought in Games 2 and 4, when he poured in 35 and 32. Detroit’s defense has been physical and disciplined; they’ve dared Cleveland’s role players to beat them and largely gotten away with it.

James Harden, acquired at the trade deadline in February, is in a series-defining situation. The veteran brings playmaking experience and the ability to generate late-shot-clock advantages off the pick-and-roll. That’s exactly what Cleveland needs if Mitchell faces another locked-in defensive scheme from Detroit.

Cleveland had not lost back-to-back games this entire postseason. Until Games 5 and 6. Whether that breaks a psychological pattern or sharpens focus is the central question going into tonight.

What happens next

The winner faces the Knicks, who have been waiting. Game 1 of that series tips off Tuesday. For Detroit, reaching the East Finals would represent one of the faster franchise turnarounds in recent memory. For Cleveland, a loss means an offseason of hard questions about whether this roster has the ceiling its construction implied. Full series stats available at NBA.com.
