Down to his last chance to save the Cavaliers’ season, Donovan Mitchell put together one of the most explosive halves in playoff history. After a forgettable first half – four points on 1-of-8 shooting – Mitchell exploded for 39 second-half points on Monday night, tying an NBA playoff record and lifting Cleveland to a 112-103 victory over the Detroit Pistons to even the series 2-2.

A record for the ages

Mitchell’s 39-point second half matches the mark set by Sleepy Floyd in 1987, the most anyone has ever scored in a single half during the NBA playoffs. He finished with 43 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists – numbers that look ordinary on paper until you account for the context: the Cavs trailed 56-52 at halftime and were on the brink of a 3-1 series deficit that almost no team survives.

The turning point was a sequence so lopsided it felt fictional. Cleveland went on a 24-0 run – fueled by 15 of those points from Mitchell – as Detroit turned the ball over five times in a stretch where the Cavaliers converted possessions into a relentless scoring wave. The Pistons, who had dictated the pace through two and a half quarters, simply had no answer.

How Mitchell flipped the game

What made the performance remarkable was how Mitchell created space. Rather than relying on isolation plays, he attacked the Pistons’ help defense systematically, drawing fouls and converting and-1 opportunities that put Detroit in foul trouble. Every time the Pistons collapsed on him, an open shooter materialized on the perimeter. When they backed off, he drove straight to the rim.

“I don’t think people understand how much that first half hurts,” Mitchell said after the game. “I just tried to be aggressive and let everything else take care of itself.”

The quote captures the mentality that has defined this series. The Cavaliers came back from 0-2 with two straight wins, transforming what looked like an early exit into a best-of-three sprint to the Eastern Conference Finals.

What comes next

Game 5 tips off Wednesday night (7 p.m. ET, ESPN) in Detroit, where the Pistons have won both of their home games in the series. Cleveland, meanwhile, has found its footing – and its best player at the right moment. A team that has never reached the Eastern Conference Finals with Mitchell at the helm is now two wins from doing exactly that.

The Cavaliers face the winner of the Knicks series should they advance. New York has already swept their way to the ECF, giving them nearly a week of rest while Cleveland fights for survival.

“I just tried to be aggressive and let everything else take care of itself.”

Bottom line
Mitchell has been here before – big moments, bigger performances. But 39 points in a single half, tying a record set nearly 40 years ago, is something else entirely. The Cavaliers are alive because one player refused to let them die.
