On Saturday, Stephen Curry becomes eligible to sign a contract extension with the Golden State Warriors. He is expected to do so quickly. The deal could be worth up to two years and $136.7 million – and it would close the book on any remaining questions about his future.

Curry heads into the final season of his current contract, a $62.6 million deal that runs through 2026-27. Once the window opens August 29, Golden State and their franchise cornerstone are widely expected to sit down and make it official within days.

ESPN insider Anthony Slater reported this week that team sources described a “mutual desire” to keep Curry in Golden State for the remainder of his career. GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. was even more direct: “I’m pretty confident Steph will finish his career as a Warrior.”

What a $136M extension actually means

If completed, the extension carries Curry through his age-40 season – territory that almost no player in league history has navigated at an elite level. At 38, he remains the deadliest shooter in the sport. His 26.4 points per game last season, paired with his shooting efficiency, put him in rare company among players his age. The Warriors are not asking him to slow down. They’re betting he won’t.

Two years of extension also gives Golden State full cap clarity heading into what could be the final chapter of a dynasty built around one of the game’s all-time greats. Rather than operating year-to-year on an expiring contract, the Warriors get to plan. That matters for roster construction and for the franchise’s ability to attract and retain supporting talent.

A revamped cast ready to compete

The extension arrives as the Warriors wrap up a busy offseason. DeMar DeRozan joined on a one-year deal, giving Curry a proven mid-range scorer and veteran leader. Georges Niang ($3.9M) and guard Brandon Williams ($2.6M) filled the final roster spots this week, bringing shooting and defensive versatility. Draymond Green is back on a one-year, $27.7 million contract.

For the first time in recent memory, Golden State enters a season without a major roster cloud hanging over it – assuming Curry puts pen to paper Saturday. The Western Conference has shifted with LeBron James moving to Philadelphia, the Clippers navigating Kawhi Leonard’s trade situation and the Thunder and Timberwolves emerging as threats. Golden State has the pieces, and the extension locks in the reason for all of it.

The announcement is expected Saturday or within days. An era that started in 2009 is, for now, set to continue through at least 2029.
