Stephen Curry says his knee feels great. Golden State’s medical staff will be watching closely regardless.

The Warriors open their 2026-27 training camp September 29 at BYU-Hawaii, and the 38-year-old superstar’s right knee will be on a monitoring protocol from day one. Curry was diagnosed with patellofemoral pain syndrome — commonly called “runner’s knee” — in February 2026, and the condition forced him to miss 27 games over the second half of last season. No surgery required. No listed limitations for 2026-27. But at 38, carrying twenty years of NBA mileage, the gap between “healthy” and “perfectly fine” is worth watching.

Between confidence and concern

Curry spent part of his summer in China on the Li-Ning Wide Open Tour, and footage from the trip showed a noticeable limp — enough to prompt concern from insiders days before camp opens. The Warriors responded quickly, with sources indicating no limitations are expected. Curry himself called the situation “fantastic.”

Runner’s knee does not typically require surgery. But at 38, it can become chronic. That is the quiet concern in San Francisco. NBC Sports Bay Area reported that his progress will be assessed on an ongoing basis once team workouts begin.

Already playing short-handed

The Warriors are opening camp without Jimmy Butler, who tore his ACL on January 19 and is not expected back until January or February 2027. Moses Moody is also managing a knee issue. That leaves Curry, Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis and rookie Yaxel Lendeborg as the core through which Golden State will need to navigate the first months of the season.

Camp runs at BYU-Hawaii until October 3. If Curry stays healthy, the Warriors have a path. If the knee flares again, the depth is not there to absorb it.
