Golden State and Stephen Curry are heading toward a two-year, $136.7 million max extension, with the contract window opening August 29, according to multiple reports from ESPN and Bleacher Report. Both sides have confirmed their interest in getting a longer deal done the moment it becomes legally possible, per Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

Curry is currently locked in through 2026-27 on a one-year, $62.6 million deal he signed last offseason. For the Warriors, getting the extension done before the regular season opens is a clear organizational priority.

The over-38 rule and what it limits

Under the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, teams cannot offer contracts lasting four or more years to players who will be 38 years old or older at any point during the deal. Curry turns 39 in March 2028, which caps the available extension at two years.

At $136.7 million over two seasons, the contract works out to roughly $68.4 million annually – placing Curry among the highest-paid players in the league by average yearly value. For context: Victor Wembanyama’s five-year max with San Antonio earlier this summer averaged $50.4 million per season.

Warriors rebuilding their picture without LeBron

The 2026 offseason reshuffled the Western Conference. LeBron James chose Philadelphia on a veteran-minimum deal in late July, ending any Warriors pursuit. Giannis Antetokounmpo was traded to Miami. Golden State kept their foundation together – Draymond Green re-signed for one year and $27.7 million, Gary Payton II returned on a veteran deal.

Bleacher Report reported no significant obstacles in the Curry extension discussions, with sources expecting a swift close once the August 29 window opens. Paperwork cannot be officially processed until September, but the expectation on both sides is a quick resolution.

Golden State did not reach the 2025-26 NBA Finals, which the New York Knicks won against the San Antonio Spurs. A two-year extension for Curry represents a bet by the Warriors that they can build back into contention by 2028, Curry’s final potential season under the new deal.
