LeBron James is running out of runway. Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, the 41-year-old has brought his free agency search down to three realistic destinations: the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Miami Heat, and the Philadelphia 76ers. The Golden State Warriors, who made a public play for the four-time champion by having Draymond Green decline his option last month, now sit on the outside, at least for the moment.

“The Warriors going into free agency, they dreamt up a grand plan of Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, LeBron James,” Charania said on ESPN. “But the big domino with them is trying to get a player like Anthony Davis. Short of that, they’re not really looked at right now at the top of this list.”

Rich Paul: “Strictly for his happiness”

LeBron’s agent Rich Paul spoke Friday with ESPN and offered the clearest picture yet of where his client’s head is. Paul confirmed he has now contacted 27 teams on James’ behalf, a number that underlines just how wide-open this decision has been. And he acknowledged the landscape shifts almost daily.

“Every day things change,” Paul told ESPN. “The Sixers didn’t have Jaylen Brown a few days ago. Now they do. This is the first time that LeBron James is making a decision pressure free. He’s won already. He’s made good on his promise, he won in L.A. This is strictly for his happiness. What does happiness entail? Basketball, living, camaraderie, competition. Everything.”

Why these three?

Cleveland carries the weight of legacy. James won the 2016 title there after trailing 3-1 against these very Warriors, arguably the defining moment of his career. The Cavaliers now field one of the deeper rosters in the East, built around Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, and Evan Mobley.

Miami is the homecoming play. Pat Riley, two titles, a Heat Culture identity James helped build from 2010 to 2014. The roster around Bam Adebayo would need reinforcements, but the pull is real.

Philadelphia is the wild card. The 76ers’ blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown from the Celtics, completed July 6 for Paul George and draft picks, vaulted them into serious contention. Brown alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey would give James the supporting cast he never quite had in his later Lakers years.

Per Charania, a decision could come early next week. The biggest offseason story in years is finally nearing its end.

[Update – July 18, 2026] Giannis Antetokounmpo publicly made his pitch for LeBron James on Friday, saying he would be “very, very excited” if James joined the Miami Heat. Per Yahoo Sports, the opportunity to play alongside Giannis has been on James’ radar longer than many around the league realized. ESPN’s Shams Charania added that an announcement could come as early as next week. LeBron himself dropped a tease at Fanatics Fest in New York on Thursday: “I won’t hold you guys up too much longer.”
