Ayo Dosunmu intends to sign a five-year, $112 million contract to return to the Minnesota Timberwolves, per ESPN. The deal carries a player option in year five and slots Dosunmu alongside Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball in one of the most dynamic backcourts taking shape in the Western Conference.

The timing reflects how fast his value rose. Minnesota acquired him from the Chicago Bulls at the February trade deadline in a package that included Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller, and four second-round picks. He arrived as a rotation piece and leaves the season as a $22.4 million-a-year cornerstone.

What the playoffs proved

Dosunmu averaged 15.6 points in 29.2 minutes per game across Minnesota’s 10-game postseason run. The signature moment came in Game 4 of the first-round series against the Denver Nuggets: 43 points off the bench in an upset win that effectively ended the series and introduced him to a national audience.

Over three months in Minnesota, he showed the two-way reliability that title contenders pay for. He guards multiple positions, moves off the ball, keeps pace in transition, and finishes consistently near the rim. His willingness to sign before the June 30 free agency start reflects a mutual commitment to the direction of the project.

The backcourt Minnesota is building

Ball arrives from Charlotte via trade. Edwards comes off another dominant season. Dosunmu brings defensive stability and an ability to play at pace. Ball was the No. 3 pick in the 2020 NBA draft. Edwards was No. 1. Dosunmu was the No. 38 pick out of Illinois in 2021. Three very different paths, one shared roster.

At $22.4 million per year, Dosunmu is not the most expensive piece of the group – that falls to Edwards and Ball. His extension sends a clear message regardless: the core is set, and the franchise is committed to it. Per NBA.com, Minnesota’s front office views the Ball trade and Dosunmu’s extension as two parts of the same plan. What the Wolves build around this trio starting June 30 will say a great deal about their ambitions in the West.
