Victor Wembanyama has signed a long-term contract extension with Nike that includes his first signature shoe line, the Wemby 1, per ESPN.
The announcement dropped Thursday via a cinematic video on social media, showing a supernova collapsing into a pulsar that slowly forms Wembanyama’s “VW” initials. Nike unveiled the logo alongside confirmation that his original deal, set to expire in October, had been replaced by a new “long-term” pact. No financial terms were disclosed.
A shoe for the alien
Wembanyama, 22, first partnered with Nike in 2022 while still playing for Metropolitans 92 in France. The extension elevates him to signature athlete status, putting him alongside LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Giannis Antetokounmpo in Nike’s basketball lineup. Of the 450-plus NBA players, fewer than 20 carry active signature lines.
No design or release date for the Wemby 1 has been confirmed yet. The “VW” logo leans into the otherworldly persona he has built since draft night in 2023, which Nike is clearly betting has global commercial legs.
Timing was no accident
The deal comes weeks after Wembanyama signed a five-year, $252 million max rookie-scale extension with the San Antonio Spurs, leaving roughly $50 million on the table to help the franchise build around him. Three seasons in, he has already posted MVP finalist numbers and won Defensive Player of the Year. His size, skill, and international profile make him one of the most marketable players the sport has produced in years.
No release date for the Wemby 1 yet. The branding machine, though, is already running.
