The Oklahoma City Thunder have traded guard Aaron Wiggins to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for two second-round draft picks, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal – the first confirmed transaction of the 2026 offseason – lands the night before the NBA Draft opens at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Deal terms
- OKC receives: Hawks 2030 second-round pick + least favorable of Hawks/Lakers 2032 second-round pick
- Atlanta receives: Aaron Wiggins (G, 26)
Tax math drives the move
Oklahoma City’s projected luxury tax penalty drops from $213 million to $152 million with Wiggins off the books – over $60 million in relief from a single transaction. The Thunder have operated near the second apron for back-to-back seasons. Offloading a rotation-caliber wing for future picks is the kind of disciplined cap management Sam Presti’s front office has run consistently.
Wiggins, 26, was under contract for three more seasons, carrying a cap hit around $8 million per year. His role had shrunk during OKC’s playoff run – 5.8 minutes per game across 13 appearances. That reflects roster depth more than anything else: when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, and Isaiah Hartenstein are all healthy, there isn’t space for a veteran wing at crunch time.
What Atlanta gets
For the Hawks, the acquisition makes sense on a rebuilding timeline. Quin Snyder’s roster needed a proven wing defender, and Wiggins – 6’5″, rangy, capable of guarding multiple positions – fills that gap without displacing any young piece. His career three-point percentage sits at 37%, which translates well to Atlanta’s spacing-heavy system. A quality rotation player for two second-rounders is quietly good business.
OKC stays active
The Thunder enter draft night with multiple first-round picks and a lighter tax bill. Whether Oklahoma City adds a higher-profile piece this summer to complement Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP-caliber talent remains the central question heading into the offseason. This trade is the opener – not the headline.
