The NBA knows how to set a stage. The 2026-27 season tips off October 20 with a three-game opening night slate on NBC/Peacock – LeBron James’s first appearance at Madison Square Garden as a Philadelphia 76er, a rematch between champions and finalists, and Victor Wembanyama’s debut in the season following his $252 million max extension.
An afternoon opener no one saw coming
The Celtics travel to Detroit first, with tip-off at 3 p.m. ET – an afternoon start without recent precedent for an NBA season opener. The league placed the game in that slot to allow European fans to catch it during evening hours. The Pistons won three of four regular-season meetings against Boston last year, which makes the matchup more than just a scheduling curiosity.
LeBron at the Garden – 24 seasons in, still the main event
The game the whole league circles arrives at 7 p.m. ET. LeBron James, in his 24th season and set to turn 42 in December, steps onto the MSG floor for the first time in a 76ers uniform. He’ll face the reigning NBA champions – the New York Knicks, who won their first title since 1973 this past June. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks will not be hosting a welcome party.
Wembanyama and the Thunder close it out
At 9:30 p.m. ET, the Oklahoma City Thunder visit San Antonio. Victor Wembanyama steps onto the court for his first regular-season game since agreeing to a five-year, $252 million rookie max extension in July. Last season, the 22-year-old averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game and carried the Spurs to the NBA Finals, where they fell to the Knicks in five games. October 20 is where his answer begins.
The full 82-game schedule was released Thursday. Per ESPN, the 76ers, Knicks, Spurs and Lakers are tied for the most national television appearances this season.
