New York City has a date. The Knicks – 2026 NBA champions for the first time in 53 years – will celebrate with a ticker-tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes on Thursday, June 18, starting at 10 a.m.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed the details Sunday, a day after Jalen Brunson’s 45-point performance sealed a 94-90 Game 5 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. The procession begins at Battery Park, runs north along Broadway through the Canyon of Heroes, and ends at City Hall, where Mamdani will host a championship ceremony on City Hall Plaza – including keys to the city for players and coaching staff. Municipal buildings across all five boroughs will be lit in blue and orange Thursday evening.
First ticker-tape parade in Knicks history
That detail is worth sitting with. Broadway has hosted 210 ticker-tape parades since 1886 – for astronauts, returning POWs, Yankees dynasties, the ’86 Mets. The Knicks have never been on that list. Not once. The franchise won titles in 1970 and 1973, but the Canyon of Heroes never had a Knick walk through it as champion. This is a first.
The last title came on May 10, 1973, when Willis Reed and Walt Frazier dispatched the Lakers in five games. Anyone who remembers watching that as an adult is now in their 70s. The franchise reached the Finals four more times – 1974, 1994, 1999 – without winning again. Six Spurs championships, six Warriors championships, and one very long dry spell later, here we are.
How they got here
This wasn’t luck. The Knicks won 54 games in the regular season, swept the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, then beat a Spurs team built around Victor Wembanyama (19 points, 14 rebounds, 5 blocks in Game 5) in five tense games. Per NBA Communications, every game in this series was within five points in the final five minutes – the only Finals in league history where that was true across the board.
Brunson’s Game 5 performance sealed his Finals MVP case. His 45 points are tied for the third-most in an NBA Finals closeout game, behind only Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bob Pettit (both with 50). He hit 14 of 27 shots, 13 of 15 free throws, and outscored his team’s remaining players – who shot a combined 28.3% from the field. The Knicks trailed by 16 at halftime and by 10 late in the fourth quarter.
Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, and Brunson became the first trio of teammates to win both an NCAA championship and an NBA title together – their Villanova bonds formed in 2016 and 2018. Karl-Anthony Towns grabbed 19 rebounds. OG Anunoby, returning from injury, played 38 disciplined minutes in the clincher.
What comes next
Thursday is the city’s moment. The front office’s work starts soon after. Mitchell Robinson, Jose Alvarado, and Jordan Clarkson all enter free agency this summer. The Knicks also hold the No. 24 pick in the June 23 draft at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
But first: June 18, Battery Park, 10 a.m. Broadway gets its newest champions. Mayor Mamdani’s official announcement and parade logistics via Yahoo Sports.
