The trade market around Giannis Antetokounmpo has a leading contender. The Miami Heat have emerged as the frontrunner to acquire the Milwaukee Bucks star this summer, with league sources telling CBS Sports that “the noise surrounding the Heat and Antetokounmpo remains louder than all the rest.”

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Bucks “seriously considered” Miami’s most recent offer before ultimately declining. The package, detailed by Miami Herald reporter Barry Jackson, included Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, and two future first-round picks with pick swaps attached.

Milwaukee passed. Ownership concluded that waiting for the summer market to develop would yield better options – but the fact that the offer was seriously considered tells its own story about Miami’s position in this race.

Why the Bucks said no – for now

Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam has set a self-imposed deadline of the NBA Draft (June 23) to resolve Antetokounmpo’s future. The framework is binary: either an extension or a trade. Haslam has said directly, “One of two things will happen: Either he will be extended or he’ll be traded.”

Antetokounmpo has two years remaining on his current contract. That gives Milwaukee leverage to hold out for a better offer without the urgency of a player demanding to leave on short notice. The team’s calculation: once franchises have cap clarity post-draft, more aggressive packages should surface.

What Miami actually put on the table

Herro remains the centerpiece of any Heat trade package. The 26-year-old guard averaged 20.5 points last season and is one of the more coveted trade assets in the league. Kel’el Ware, the former No. 15 pick, has developed into a legitimate prospect. Add the No. 13 selection and two future firsts, and Miami built a credible case.

The question is whether the Bucks can find something better. Their internal bar likely involves either a top-three pick or a package anchored by a near-star-level player alongside Herro. That combination is harder to assemble elsewhere, which is why Miami keeps coming back to the front of the conversation.

Who else is competing

According to ESPN, at least 10 teams have been identified as potential trade partners. The Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, and Boston Celtics have all been mentioned in connection with Antetokounmpo. The Warriors’ interest focuses on adding a centerpiece to their contending core. The Rockets, already built around Kevin Durant, would be making an aggressive bet on two stars coexisting.

The Bucks hold all the cards until June 23. After that, the calculus shifts, per CBS Sports.

Miami got the closest anyone has in the current market. Whether that’s still enough when the deadline arrives is the question the next three weeks will answer.
