Fifteen months is a long time to be away. Tyrese Haliburton says the wait is over.

The Indiana Pacers guard declared himself fully healthy ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season, ending one of the longer and more complicated recovery stretches any star has had to navigate in recent years. A torn Achilles suffered in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, a shingles diagnosis that froze his rehab mid-process, and a full season on the sidelines – Haliburton has cleared every obstacle. Per sources close to the franchise, the Pacers are “extremely optimistic” he will be ready from Day 1 when training camp opens September 29.

The road back, step by step

Haliburton publicly marked his return to 5-on-5 play on X in April 2026, a moment that quietly signaled the road back was almost over. He ramped up intensity through the summer, running full-contact sessions with no restrictions.

“Pretty much say I’m back at this point,” Haliburton said, per reports. The shingles diagnosis, which forced him to pause Achilles rehab for several weeks, added real weight to an already punishing recovery. He had to rebuild twice from a lower base. The fact that he cleared both issues without long-term complications reflects how carefully his medical team managed the process. Chris Haynes of TNT reported that Pacers executives view his return to full health as a franchise-defining moment for the 2026-27 season.

What Indiana built around him

The Pacers used 2025-26 to retool, not rebuild. They added center Ivica Zubac at the trade deadline, giving Rick Carlisle a rim anchor that fits naturally alongside Indiana’s pace-and-space system. Younger players absorbed bigger roles, and the organization made no secret that its entire competitive window was tied to Haliburton’s return.

Before going down, Haliburton had become the most creative point guard in the Eastern Conference – a pick-and-roll operator who saw actions three possessions ahead, with a three-point shot that defenses had stopped dismissing. The Pacers reached the 2025 NBA Finals on the back of his playmaking. Now, 11 days from training camp, the question is no longer whether he plays. It’s how quickly he finds his ceiling again.
