The window is narrowing fast. Multiple NBA insiders reported this week that a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade is expected before the June 23 NBA Draft – but a deal with the Miami Heat, the clear frontrunner, remains incomplete because Milwaukee is not satisfied with what’s been offered.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the holdup is direct: the Bucks “are not in love” with Miami’s current package, which has reportedly centered on Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jacquez Jr. and the No. 13 pick in this week’s draft.

What Giannis Wants – and Why It May Not Be Enough

Per Shams Charania of ESPN, the two-time MVP still wants to end up in Miami. But as Charania noted, even Giannis doesn’t fully know how the situation resolves – a candid acknowledgment that player preference and front-office negotiations are running on separate tracks.

Marc Stein, writing on Substack, described the trade as “drawing near” and said there is growing belief in league circles that Milwaukee will move the Greek Freak before Tuesday’s draft. The Boston Celtics are also in the picture, with reports indicating Boston is exploring both a trade and a potential contract extension.

Could It Slip Past the Draft?

TNT’s Chris Haynes offered a measured counterpoint: “This can drag into free agency. This could drag on into July.” Haynes made clear the Bucks are not treating the draft as a hard deadline – they want the right deal, not just a fast one.

If the Heat deal collapses, Boston has positioned itself as a genuine alternative. Milwaukee holds leverage here: a loaded draft class gives the Bucks options they didn’t have a year ago. Whether they push for a pre-draft resolution or wait depends entirely on what Miami puts back on the table.

The 2026 NBA Draft takes place June 23. For the latest trade intelligence, ESPN tracked all 10 realistic trade destinations for Antetokounmpo.

[Update – June 20, 2026] Trade discussions around Antetokounmpo have intensified over the past seven to 10 days, per Bleacher Report. The Boston Celtics have emerged as a credible alternative to Miami, and the Bucks are no longer operating under the assumption that a deal must close before the June 23 draft. The timeline could extend into July. The Heat remain the frontrunner, with Antetokounmpo still preferring South Beach, but the Celtics’ involvement has added genuine competition to negotiations.
