Jalen Brunson won the NBA championship with a damaged wrist and told no one. The New York Knicks’ Finals MVP underwent left wrist surgery after the title run, the team confirmed, following his own disclosure that he sustained the injury in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He then played through it – two more playoff games to close out Cleveland, then an entire NBA Finals series – before going under the knife. Brunson is expected to return to basketball activities this summer and be ready for training camp, which opens September 29, per NBA.com and Yahoo Sports.

What playing through a wrist injury looks like

Brunson’s numbers held up across the full playoff run. That is the remarkable part. Wrist injuries affect shooting mechanics, finishing at the rim, and the ability to absorb contact – all things Brunson relies on. That he maintained his level while managing pain speaks to both his toughness and the depth of the Knicks’ championship run.

The surgery itself is described as a repair procedure. The Knicks expect a recovery window of roughly two months post-operation, which puts Brunson on track to join his teammates well before preseason games begin in early October.

The defending champions approach camp healthy

New York begins the 2026-27 season as defending champions, a position the franchise has not been in for decades. Brunson’s health heading into camp matters. He is the engine of Mike Brown’s offense – the player teams design their entire defensive scheme around.

The Knicks made few significant roster moves this offseason, choosing to keep the core that won the title largely intact. A healthy Brunson available from day one of training camp is the best news they could have received. Surgery is done. The wrist is healing. New York expects its leader back.
