Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam has put a clock on one of the NBA offseason’s most consequential storylines. Speaking to reporters this week, Haslam said the organization wants a decision on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future finalized before the June 23 NBA Draft – either a max extension or a trade.

“The draft’s what, June 23rd and 24th,” Haslam said. “Sometime over the next six or seven weeks, we’ll decide whether Giannis is going to sign a max contract and stay with us or he’s going to play somewhere else.”

What Milwaukee wants in return

The Bucks finished 32-50 this season, ending a run of nine consecutive playoff appearances. Per ESPN, Milwaukee is seeking a blue-chip young player and a significant package of draft picks in any deal. The asking price has held since the trade deadline, and the front office does not appear to be discounting it.

Multiple teams have entered trade discussions. The Golden State Warriors, holding the No. 11 pick in the 2026 Draft, have been among the most active suitors – though ESPN’s reporting suggests they are not the frontrunner, as their current roster limits the quality of any package they can assemble. The Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and New York Knicks are also tracking the situation closely.

Giannis is ready to move on

Nothing in Antetokounmpo’s stance has shifted: the two-time MVP has signaled he’s prepared to leave. He has one year remaining on his current contract, which forces Milwaukee’s hand – waiting until free agency means getting nothing back. Haslam’s public deadline changes the dynamic; the market is now working on a specific schedule. Teams with the best packages have roughly three weeks to sharpen their offers before draft night reorders everyone’s priorities.

The Bucks aren’t bluffing. Haslam said what he meant, and Milwaukee’s 32-50 record this season made the subtext clear. Something is about to change.
