Jalen Williams is listed as questionable for Thursday night’s Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, the Oklahoma City Thunder confirmed. Williams has been sidelined since aggravating a left hamstring strain in Game 2, and has not played in three consecutive playoff games.

A season-long battle

The injury is nothing new for Williams. He’s played just 37 of the Thunder’s 82 regular-season games this year, and his hamstring has kept him out for stretches at a time. The timing, though, could hardly be worse. OKC holds a 3-2 lead and needs one more win to reach the NBA Finals. Williams scored 26 points in Game 1 before going down two nights later.

Without him, the Thunder still managed to extend their lead – thanks largely to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 32-point performance in Game 5, plus 22 from bench spark Alex Caruso and 20 from Jared McCain in his first career postseason start. But Williams is not just a scorer. He’s one of the more complete two-way players in the league, and his absence has forced OKC to lean harder on its depth than anyone anticipated at this stage.

What it means for Game 6

If Williams plays, even at limited minutes, it changes the matchup math significantly. The Spurs have found some rhythm in this series – Victor Wembanyama posted 33 points and eight rebounds in San Antonio’s Game 4 win, and De’Aaron Fox has been a consistent secondary threat. An available Williams gives head coach Mark Daigneault more defensive options on both ends.

If he can’t go, McCain is expected to draw another start. The 20-year-old rookie handled the spotlight well in Game 5, scoring 18 of his 20 points in the second half when it mattered most. That kind of production from an unproven player in an elimination-game environment is rare – and OKC would need it again.

Game 6 tips off Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC/Peacock from the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. A Thunder win sends them to the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. A Spurs win forces a Game 7 in Oklahoma City on Saturday. Per Heavy.com and CBS Sports, Williams’ status will not be finalized until closer to tip.
