The Cleveland Cavaliers will keep Kenny Atkinson as their head coach entering the 2026-27 season, according to The Athletic’s Joe Vardon. The decision came less than 24 hours after the Cavaliers were routed 130-93 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, completing a sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks.

Why they’re keeping him

The numbers are not hard to justify. Since Atkinson took over from J.B. Bickerstaff in 2024, Cleveland has gone 116-48 across two regular seasons – a .707 winning percentage. He won NBA Coach of the Year honors in 2024-25. A sweep is brutal, but the regular-season foundation is real, and Cleveland’s front office clearly sees the distinction.

Atkinson had been linked to Jason Kidd as a potential replacement following the playoff exit. Kidd, recently let go by the Dallas Mavericks, was reportedly on the Cavaliers’ radar. Cleveland went in the other direction.

What went wrong against the Knicks

The series wasn’t close. New York swept Cleveland 4-0, with the final margin a 37-point blowout. Jalen Brunson averaged 25.5 points and 7.8 assists per game and was named ECF MVP. The Cavaliers had no answer for the Knicks’ depth and Brunson’s playmaking in crunch time. Whether that reflects a coaching problem or a roster problem – or both – is a debate Cleveland must work through this summer.

What comes next

Atkinson stays. The roster question is more complicated. James Harden, acquired at the trade deadline, remains on the books. Darius Garland went the other way in that deal, heading to the LA Clippers. Cleveland has cap decisions to make and a summer of self-assessment ahead. Atkinson will be central to those conversations.

The Cavaliers open their offseason with their coach settled. The real question now is how much the roster around him changes.
