Detroit’s defensive anchor isn’t going anywhere. Ausar Thompson has agreed to a five-year, $155 million rookie-scale contract extension with the Detroit Pistons, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal was announced Friday, locking in the 23-year-old through at least 2030.

No player or team option is included.

A Case Built on Defense

Thompson’s 2025-26 season made this hard to argue against. He led the entire NBA in steals per game (2.0), earned first-team All-Defense, and finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Three seasons ago he was still finding his footing.

His box score (9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 0.9 blocks per game) doesn’t scream max territory at first glance. But Detroit ranked among the best defensive units in the Eastern Conference last year, and Thompson was the engine. His impact doesn’t always show up in counting stats – it shows up in opponent shooting percentages and transition opportunities killed before they start.

A Historic First for the Thompson Twins

This deal carries a footnote worth noting. Twin brother Amen Thompson signed his own five-year, $208 million extension with the Houston Rockets earlier this offseason. That makes Ausar and Amen Thompson the first pair of brothers in NBA history to each sign contracts worth over $100 million – combining for $363 million between them.

No twins had reached that combined figure in any major American professional sport before.

Detroit Bets on Its Core

For the Pistons, the commitment signals where this franchise is headed. After years of stockpiling prospects, Detroit is locking down its nucleus. Thompson joins Jalen Duren and Cade Cunningham in a core that the front office believes can compete in the East sooner than most expect.

At $31 million per year, he’s priced as a defensive specialist with room to grow offensively. The risk is real – but Detroit has earned some credibility on how it develops young defenders.

Per Yahoo Sports, the contract is fully guaranteed.
