Houston is not done building.
Amen Thompson has agreed to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale extension with the Rockets, sources told ESPN. The deal includes a 10% trade kicker and runs through the 2032 season.
Thompson delivered a breakout 2025-26 campaign, posting career-best averages of 18.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He earned a First Team All-Defense selection in 2024-25 and has developed into one of the most disruptive two-way wings in the Western Conference.
The price of growth
The contract carries the same cap percentage as Alperen Sengun’s five-year, $185 million extension signed in 2024 – reflecting how quickly Thompson’s value has risen since arriving as the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft. Houston has now locked in four pillars: Thompson, Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason, the nucleus behind two consecutive 52-win seasons.
Paying $208 million for a 23-year-old without an All-Star selection will generate debate. His scoring is real. His playmaking has grown. The open question is whether he becomes a franchise offensive anchor or a high-value complementary piece inside a Sengun-led offense. The Rockets are betting on the first answer.
What it means for Houston
The Rockets have not reached a Conference Finals since the James Harden era. This core is built differently – younger, longer, more defensive-minded. The Thompson extension removes the biggest roster uncertainty ahead of 2026-27 and signals that the front office sees more ceiling than the last three playoff exits suggested.
Thompson turns 24 in October. His deal runs through 2032.
