The Houston Rockets made it official Thursday: Amen Thompson is staying. The 23-year-old forward agreed to a five-year, $208 million contract extension that keeps him in Houston through 2032, per ESPN. The deal includes a 10% trade kicker – a clause that signals, loudly, just how much the Rockets value his commitment.

His rookie deal would have paid him $12.3 million in 2026-27. He just secured something else entirely.

A season that built the case

Thompson started 79 games last season and averaged 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.51 steals per game. Numbers that put him among the most complete players at his position in the league. Not just offensively – his defensive breakthrough had come a year earlier, when he was named to the All-Defensive First Team at the end of the 2024-25 season.

That selection confirmed what scouts had believed since Houston took him fourth overall in the 2023 draft. Thompson was never just a raw athlete. He reads the game, sustains defensive intensity across 36 minutes, and has steadily grown as a playmaker. Three years into his NBA career, he looks like a franchise pillar.

Bleacher Report noted the extension locks Thompson in through the 2031-32 season, with the trade kicker effectively raising the cost for any team that might come looking.

What it means for the Rockets

Houston is building deliberately. Alperen Şengün anchors the frontcourt. Jabari Smith Jr. has taken strides. And now Thompson, locked in long-term, gives the organization a young core with years of development still ahead. He turns 24 in January. This contract runs to 29 – prime years for a player who gets better every time he’s on the floor.

Training camp opens September 29. The Rockets head into it with no drama and no unfinished business on Thompson’s contract. Clean offseason. Clear direction.

$208 million and a decade in the league ahead of him. The kid drafted fourth in 2023 is, officially, a Rocket for the long haul. Whether Houston can build a contender around him before those five years expire – that’s the question worth watching.
