Pistons, Jalen Duren Still $5M Apart as Training Camp Looms

A five-year max offer sits on the table. Duren wants more. With camp three weeks away, both sides are waiting each other out.

The Jalen Duren holdout is entering its most consequential stretch. The Detroit Pistons and their 22-year-old All-NBA center remain roughly $5 million per year apart in contract negotiations, with training camp set to open on September 29, per multiple reports from ESPN and HoopsHype.

Where things stand

The Pistons are offering a five-year deal in the range of $35 million annually – a package approaching $180 million in total guaranteed money. Duren, coming off a third-team All-NBA season as the anchor of Detroit’s Eastern Conference-leading defense, is seeking in excess of $40 million per year. That’s the supermax territory he’s eligible for after earning All-NBA honors.

“This is just a staring contest,” an executive from another team told ESPN’s Tim Bontemps. “And it’s going to drag.”

What’s keeping both sides apart

The core dispute isn’t surprising – it’s a gap in valuation, not good faith. Duren is arguably the best defensive center in the Eastern Conference at age 22. Detroit’s franchise outlook rides on him. But the Pistons, still assembling around Cade Cunningham, are reluctant to commit to a deal that would push them deep into the luxury tax for years.

Duren’s position is equally logical. His one-year qualifying offer sits at $9.6 million – a route that would mean walking away from more than $100 million in guaranteed money. He hasn’t signed it – a sign he believes the gap will close in his favor. Comparable deals for peers like Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero and Walker Kessler set a pricing floor, but Duren’s All-NBA selection – an honor neither Banchero nor Kessler can claim – justifies the higher ask.

The September 29 pressure point

Training camp is the unofficial deadline in these standoffs. A player who misses camp loses reps, cohesion time and game checks. The clock is ticking – but neither Detroit nor Duren’s camp has shown signs of blinking first. If no deal comes together before October, expect this to become the NBA’s loudest offseason storyline heading into the regular season.
