Jaylen Brown’s farewell to Boston was not a press conference or a quiet locker room goodbye. It was 10,000 people on Boston Common on a Sunday afternoon, a street sign that reads “Jaylen Brown Way,” and a key to the city.

The event, called 741 Frequency Fest, was organized through Brown’s own brand, 741 Performance. It ran from 2 to 7 p.m. ET on August 30 – free to attend, no tickets required. Mayor Michelle Wu was on hand. So was Rep. Christopher Worrell, who presented Brown with a key to his 5th Suffolk District “for his incredible work in the Black and brown community.” The state of Massachusetts added its own key to the pile.

A decade in green

Brown was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers on July 1, ending a 10-year run in Celtic green. He had arrived in Boston as the third overall pick in 2016, raw and 19 years old, and left as the 2024 NBA Finals MVP – the player who helped close the Celtics’ 16-year championship drought. He re-signed on a supermax extension in 2023, which is what made the eventual trade so hard to parse from the outside.

Boston, for its part, did not need much time to form an opinion on what Brown gave the city.

Brown told the crowd he was at a loss for words, per ESPN. “When I got to this city, I said I’m going to go to war for this city. I met so many great people here. People that helped me in the community, that motivated me on my journey,” he said. “I just want to say thank you to Boston, thank you to the city, and I love you.”

More than basketball

Brown estimated the crowd at roughly 10,000 on his Twitch stream after the event wrapped. That number is not ceremonial. It says something about what a decade of showing up – on the court and in the community – actually builds.

His 741 Performance brand, his sustained community work, his public advocacy on social issues: Brown built something in Boston that lived beyond the game. Sunday was the public accounting of that.

He heads to Philadelphia now. The Sixers acquired him in what was described as a blockbuster trade, betting on him as the central piece of a championship pursuit. Boston moves into a different era without him – the first significant rebuild the Celtics have faced in well over a decade, per Yahoo Sports.

The send-off matched the tenure. Few players leave a city they did not win multiple titles with and get 10,000 people on a Sunday afternoon. Brown did.
