Victor Wembanyama returned from a one-game suspension with one of the most complete performances in recent playoff history, posting 27 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three blocks as the San Antonio Spurs routed the Minnesota Timberwolves 126-97 in Game 5 on Tuesday. The Spurs lead the Western Conference Semifinal series 3-2.
A response that needed no translation
Ejected in Game 4 for an elbow to Naz Reid, Wembanyama picked up right where he left off – except with more intent. By the time Minnesota called its first timeout with 5:44 left in the first quarter, he had already outscored the entire Timberwolves roster 16-11 on his own. San Antonio led by as many as 30 and held a 68-36 edge in points in the paint over 48 minutes.
The stat line – 27 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two three-pointers – is the first of its kind in NBA postseason history since the introduction of the three-point line in 1979-80, per ESPN. At 22, Wembanyama becomes the third-youngest player ever to produce that combination in a playoff game, behind only Magic Johnson (20) and Luka Dončić (21).
The Spurs’ depth answered, too
Wembanyama didn’t win this one alone. Keldon Johnson delivered 21 points, De’Aaron Fox added 18 and Stephon Castle finished with 17 as four Spurs reached double figures. The collective efficiency underscored a broader truth: this team doesn’t just survive without Wembanyama – it competes. With him healthy and focused, it overwhelms.
One win from the Western Conference Finals
San Antonio heads into Game 6 on Friday with a chance to advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2019. Minnesota must win twice – including a potential Game 7 back in San Antonio – to stay alive. Game 6 tips off Friday at 9:30 p.m. ET on Prime Video.
