Bam Adebayo Picks Giannis as Favorite Teammate as Miami Heat Eye Title Run

Bam Adebayo didn't hesitate: Giannis is his favorite new teammate. With Miami's title odds moving from 30-1 to 18-1, the Heat are all business this offseason.

The question was simple. Asked to name his favorite new teammate on the revamped Miami Heat roster, Bam Adebayo didn’t hesitate for a second.

“I’m gonna have to go with Giannis,” Adebayo told reporters at a charity event last week, grinning as he named his new frontcourt partner over everybody else on the roster.

It wasn’t shocking – but the ease with which Adebayo said it tells you something real about where this franchise stands. Miami pulled off one of the summer’s blockbuster deals in early July, shipping Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and three first-round picks and a pick swap to Milwaukee for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis. The moment the deal cleared, the Heat’s championship odds moved from 30-1 to 18-1 at multiple sportsbooks.

Adebayo, 29, has spent most of a decade as Miami’s defensive pillar and its most reliable star through the Butler era. Now his role shifts – not the undisputed centerpiece, but the ideal co-star for one of the best players alive. The fit is genuine. Giannis attacks the rim like a runaway train; Adebayo reads the floor at a level few centers in the league can match. Two bigs who make the right play, not necessarily the highlight play.

“You look forward to it,” Adebayo said at the same event. “I feel like Pat has been trying to get somebody of that star level for a while now. Being able to have that shift and that change. We’re looking for growth, we’re looking to obviously win games and have some fun.”

The chemistry is building off the court as well. The Heat’s social media team posted clips of Giannis recreating old Adebayo memes – a small thing, but it signals ease in a new city for the 31-year-old Greek forward.

What this frontcourt changes

Miami’s offense over recent seasons was built around guard movement, role players finding pockets, and Adebayo as the halfcourt hub. That architecture is changing. Giannis opens driving lanes that have never existed at this address, and Adebayo – who has thrived alongside other stars throughout his career – doesn’t need the ball to impact the game.

Defense is where this pairing could really set the Heat apart. Miami under Erik Spoelstra has always been a scheme-first team. Giannis, with his length and motor, warps defensive alignments on the other end. Paired with Adebayo, the Heat may present one of the most disruptive frontcourts the East has seen in years.

With the Knicks, LeBron’s 76ers and a Celtics group reconfigured around Jaylen Brown all jostling in the East, the 2026-27 conference race shapes up as one of the deepest in recent memory. Adebayo knows Miami belongs in that conversation. Pat Riley spent a long time trying to build something like this.
