At 29, Alpha Diallo finally gets his shot. The Denver Nuggets have signed the reigning EuroLeague Defender of the Year to a one-year, $1.4 million contract, per multiple reports. One of Europe’s premier perimeter stoppers is heading to a title contender.
Diallo left better money on the table to get there. The 6’7″ wing had options overseas – Monaco, where he spent four-plus years building his reputation, would have paid more. He chose Denver. That kind of decision at 29 tells you something about what’s driving him.
Who is Alpha Diallo?
Born in New York City, Diallo played college basketball at Providence before going undrafted in 2020. One season in Greece (GS Lavrio), then Monaco – where he became the cornerstone of one of Europe’s most competitive clubs.
In his final EuroLeague season, Diallo averaged 11.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game, leading the entire competition in steals. The EuroLeague Best Defender award followed. So did back-to-back LNB Pro A championships with Monaco and consecutive Best Defender honors in France. His shooting from three (33.6%) isn’t what scouts call elite. His defensive footprint is.
Diallo covers perimeter scorers, brings length and anticipation, and doesn’t wilt in pressure moments. Monaco reached two EuroLeague Final Fours during his time there. He wasn’t a bystander.
What he brings to Denver
The Nuggets don’t need Alpha Diallo to score. Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and the core handle that. Denver needs length, defensive energy and someone who earned his reputation going up against Europe’s best guards night after night for four seasons.
At a minimum salary, the risk is essentially zero. If Diallo translates – and his defensive instincts suggest he should – Denver gets a quality rotational wing who took a pay cut to chase a ring at 29. His journey from undrafted to EuroLeague Defender of the Year is one of the better player development stories in recent memory. Now it gets an NBA chapter.
