The Miami Heat handed LeBron James watchers a jolt on Tuesday – then tried to walk it back.

The franchise briefly published a YouTube link titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference | July 27, 2026.” The page was pulled within minutes. A team spokesperson called it a preparation error: the Heat had been building out assets in case James chose Miami, and a staffer posted the link publicly before it was supposed to.

The market did not wait for an explanation. Prediction platform Kalshi logged Miami’s odds at 51% right after the link appeared, up from 39% earlier in the day. A 12-point swing triggered by what the team insists was human error.

How we got here

James, 41, declined his option with the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason and has been the NBA’s defining free agent for weeks. Three destinations have been in serious play: the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Heat (who would be hosting him for a third stint in South Beach), and the Philadelphia 76ers.

His agent Rich Paul cooled the temperature on Monday. “He’s not going to be rushed,” Paul told reporters. The Heat’s social media team appeared to be on a different schedule.

July 27 is now a date to watch

Social media departments do not build stream links, titles, and thumbnails for scenarios they consider remote. “Preparing for the possibility” reads differently when a specific date is baked into the URL. Whether James has already communicated his choice and an announcement is imminent, or whether the Heat’s content team simply got ahead of themselves, only Rich Paul’s camp knows for certain.

“We were in the process of preparing for the possibility of LeBron James joining our team and the link was inadvertently made public,” a Heat spokesperson told Yahoo Sports. “There is no validity to it being published.”

The Cavaliers and 76ers have not commented. Per multiple reports, no announcement is expected until James is ready. But July 27 is now circled on every NBA fan’s calendar.
