LeBron James may be 41 years old, but he has never entered free agency quite like this. His agent Rich Paul has gone public with a 10-team shortlist for his client’s next destination – and the Heat, Cavaliers, and 76ers sit at the center of the board.
Paul spoke openly on his podcast this week, revealing that he has held discussions with 27 teams around the league. He separated the suitors into two groups: a core tier featuring the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Timberwolves – and an outer circle that includes the Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and San Antonio Spurs.
“This is the first time that LeBron James is making a decision pressure-free,” Paul told ESPN. “This is strictly for his happiness.”
A pressure-free decision – for once
James confirmed last week that he will not return to the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons. No televised announcement. No open letters. Just a clean exit as he heads into his record 24th NBA season.
He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game in 2025-26 – numbers that make the “where will he go?” question as relevant as ever. Paul’s framing – “strictly for his happiness” – signals that no financial offer will override fit and environment.
76ers emerge as the week’s biggest storyline
Philadelphia’s presence in the top tier caught most observers off guard. One day after trading for Jaylen Brown, the 76ers moved directly to pitch LeBron, sources told ESPN. A theoretical lineup of Brown, LeBron, and Joel Embiid – if Embiid remains healthy – would rank among the most formidable in league history.
Cleveland’s appeal is sentimental and practical: Donovan Mitchell leads a young, competitive core, and the city’s relationship with James never really ended. Miami offers Spoelstra’s system, which LeBron knows better than any other in the league.
The Warriors’ drop to the outer circle is notable – Golden State had been heavily linked to James just weeks ago. Paul confirmed no team has been ruled out, but the hierarchy on the board is clear.
James has not set a public timeline for his decision. Paul will present a full summary of options before any choice is made.

[Update – July 5, 2026, 09:00 UTC] LeBron James has formally informed the Los Angeles Lakers through agent Rich Paul that he will play elsewhere in 2026-27, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. The Golden State Warriors have emerged as a frontrunner – Draymond Green previously declined his player option to help create space, and Kristaps Porzingis signed a two-year extension with the club. Rich Paul told reporters he does not expect a decision “anytime soon,” signaling the process could take weeks. The Cavaliers, Heat, and Timberwolves remain in contention. Lakers governor Jeanie Buss released a statement thanking James for his eight seasons in Los Angeles, including the 2020 championship.
